Wine Corks Recycled into Flip Flops

Turn old corks into flip flops by donating them to BevMo and ReCORK.

Cork is a durable material that can be recycled into anything from craft supplies to flooring. Now, it can make its way from your wine bottle to your feet. After a bit of cleaning, of course.

Nationwide alcohol retailer BevMo!, has recognized the wine stopper’s power just in time for Earth Day. Starting April 22, the adult beverage purveyor will pair up with wine cork recyclers ReCORK and footwear manufacturers Sole to create cork flip flops.

Customers can drop off their wine corks at any California or Arizona BevMo! location. On Earth Day, those who drop off their used corks will receive a reusable wine carrier bag and free cork coasters . They can enter to win a pair of the cork flip flops.

“As something that’s renewable, biodegradable and recyclable, natural cork is a fitting symbol with which to recognize Earth Day,” says Alan Johnson, BevMo!’s chief executive officer in a statement. “We are excited about our partnership with ReCORK and pleased to make a contribution to the environment by providing our customers with an easy way to recycle their corks and thereby give used corks a second life.”

ReCORK also pairs with cork-using recycling partners like American Airlines, Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and wine bars across the country to make sure cork finds new life.
