Understanding What’s Seasonal

As a recent transplant from the Midwest, I had little idea what’s in season in Arizona right now. Becoming a regular patron at your local farmers’ market will certainly help you learn what’s in season in your area, but there are plenty of resources out there to assist you in researching ahead of time, which helped me know what to look for.

Epicurious’s Seasonal Ingredient Map is a great resource that allows you to search your state and month, and then suggests recipes for ingredients that are available. I learned, for example, that I ought to be on the lookout for summer squashes, tomatoes, okra, peaches, melons, corn, apples and black-eyed peas.
