More than “natural” flavors

Liquor companies can’t attain organic certification if they use chemical fermentation aids, but you may be surprised to find out how many synthetic additives could still be lurking in that bottle of hooch labeled “made with natural ingredients.”

“You can call something ‘natural banana flavoring,’ and a banana didn’t come within 5,000 miles of it, because there are natural flavorings that exist that taste and smell exactly like banana,” Evanow said.

“So for us, a big part of our education process is showing people…that if we’re saying that we put pear into our Square One Botanicals, then the only thing that they’re getting is an organic pear,” she explained. “Because you could fake it and still be organic.”

Along with its original blend, the Square One product line includes cucumber, basil and botanical flavored vodkas. Unlike many flavored spirits, Square One contains no sugar or carbohydrates, meaning the organic sip is not only better for our planet but also better for your waistline than most other vodkas on the market.

“Every single component that goes into that bottle is exactly what we say it is, and if we can’t do it, we won’t do it,” Evanow said. “The cucumber took us three years to develop. It tasted like pickles! It was disgusting…But when we finally nailed it, it was worth it.”

Try culinary cocktails at your next bash

When Evanow founded Square One, her vision centered around creating artisanal, culinary cocktails based on gardens and farmers markets, not prepackaged mixers and sugary soft drinks.
