40% of food in the United States goes to waste, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, and much of this is produce, since fruits and veggies don’t typically last as long in storage as other foods. Herbs are no exception to this problem, especially since they are frequently sold in large quantities.
If you’ve ever bought a package of fresh herbs at the grocery store and only needed a small portion or if your herb garden has ever gotten out of control, you’ve probably found yourself wondering what to do with all those herbs. Sure, some mint or lavender might add some flavor to your compost pile, but so would your food scraps. No one wants all those herbs to go to waste. 1. Insect Repellent
What do lemons have to do with anything? If you have a little extra rosemary on your hands, you can use them to put together a quick bug repellent.
Brandy Ferguson over at The Marathon Mom provides simple instructions for how to mix up an all natural bug spray that leaves out that chemical smell. The only ingredients you’ll need are a lemon, a tablespoon of fresh rosemary and water. (A spray bottle, funnel, bowl and strainer will also be necessary.)
You can spray this mixture on your skin and clothing to keep the bugs away!
