Despite best intentions and inspiration, we all find reasons to put off projects around the house. This year, Earth911 and Lowe’s are offering seven ideas and a $400 prize to help you lose the excuse and finally get your eco-update done.

Update: Unfortunately, our contest is now closed, but stay tuned for more great ideas from Earth911!

Editor’s Note: Earth911 partners with many industries, manufacturers and organizations to support its Recycling Directory, the largest in the nation, which is provided to consumers at no cost. Lowe’s is one of these partners.

Rain harvesting can be a valuable water conservation tool, even on a household level. In most residential cases, rain barrels are used to capture and store rain water and storm runoff. Though the water quality is not suitable for drinking, it is still great for landscaping and gardening.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates landscaping irrigation accounts for nearly one third of the nation’s residential water use.

Since most yards require some kind of water to be maintained, offsetting it with free rainfall can save water and money. Lowe’s can help you get your rain harvesting system set up this year, even if you’re on a budget.
