Southwest’s Cabins Set for a Green Remodel
Southwest planes’ cabins are about to get a green makeover, the airline announced this week, featuring lightweight, eco-friendly materials to increase fuel efficiency and conserve resources.
Dubbed “Evolve: The New Southwest Interior,” the cabin remodel will incorporate more durable seats that weigh 6 pounds per seat less than current seats, making the plane a total of 635 pounds lighter than current models and achieving $10 million annual savings in fuel costs. The company will reuse the cabin’s existing seat frames to save money and resources and will install recycled leather textile seat covers made from discards from the leather industry.
