Tips on Freon Removal and Disposal
If you’re looking to unload a refrigerator, air conditioner or other cooling device, you’ll have to deal with Freon disposal as well. Here are a few tips to dispose of Freon properly:
- Explore Take-Back Options: If you’re buying a new fridge or A/C unit, see if the store will recycle your old one. You can also check the manufacturer site for take-back options.
- Identify Your Freon: The ID tag on your unit should say what type of refrigerant it contains. It should be “Freon” followed by a number, or “R” followed by a number (e.g. R-11). Then you’ll know with what you’re dealing.
- Call Ahead: When you search Earth911 for appliance recycling, make sure to ask your drop-off location before going if Freon is removed. If it is, ask if there is a fee associated.
