Tips for Recycling Mattresses

Tips for Recycling Mattresses

1. Buy Green

Purchase a mattress from a company with a built-in recycling program. Emattress.com will take back all mattresses bought from them and recycle these mattresses free of charge.

2. Reuse

Reusing mattresses is possible, but can be dangerous. Even thrift stores tend to be wary of taking mattresses, as they can be infested with bugs and dirt.

If the mattress is in good condition, sell it in local newspapers or using online listings. Some major companies, such as Sleep America, refurbish mattresses to give to people with lower incomes who need beds.

3. Recycling

The materials in mattresses are recyclable. However, not all locations have the resources to recycle mattresses. To see if there is a recycling center near you that accepts used mattresses, use Earth911′s recycling locator.
