Newspaper Tips for Recycling

Because it is collected in most curbside recycling programs, recycling newspapers can be an easy step towards improving your recycling habits.  You can find collection sites in your local area by using Earth911.

In addition to being easy to recycle, newspaper can be reused in a number of ways around your home or office:

  • Take a Whiff: Newspaper is effective at removing odors. Crumple black and white newsprint in your old gym shoes, plastic containers or suitcases to remove stale odors.
  • Shape Up: Use crumpled newsprint to help your shoes, hats and purses retain their shape in storage.
  • Play it Safe: Use newsprint to wrap fragile items for storage, such as ornaments. It can also be used to cover plants in the winter to help resist frost.
  • Clean Up: Use newsprint when cleaning windows and mirrors for a lint-free shine. It is also a useful barrier between art projects, crafts, shoe or silver polishing, and your counter or table.
  • Photo-Assist: Newspaper can be used as a reflective device when taking photos to help highlight or fill the light around a subject.  You can also let wet prints dry on newspaper when working in the darkroom.
  • Wrap it Up: Use comics and ads as colorful gift-wrap. Make sure to recycle it once the gift is opened!

Be sure to remove any rubber bands or plastic bags before you place your paper in the recycling bin.  These may not be accepted in your local curbside program, but at other locations in your area. Use Earth911 to find out where to recycle plastic bags and other items in your neighborhood.
