DC Provides Recycling Bins on Streets

Hawaii Recycles Record 72 Percent of Beverage Containers

Hawaii has announced the results of its beverage container recycling efforts for the fiscal year 2008, and the state increased recycling by four percent to reach 72 percent recovery, an all-time high. Anchorage Doubles Curbside Recycling

Nearly double the number of homes in Anchorage, Alaska will soon have curbside recycling available. The city's biggest trash hauler, Alaska Waste, will offer the program to 35,000 of its 44,000 customers, reports the Anchorage Daily News. Test Shows More Recycle When Items Not Separated

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that a pilot program in 2007 of single-stream recycling more than tripled the amount recycled, and the county is considering a permanent switch as a result. Keep Salem Beautiful to Provide Recycle Bins for Residents

The Salem Times-Commoner features news that the Illinois city will be offering free recycling bins during several weeks through March in efforts to encourage residents to recycle. The bins will be available on three different occasions: from January 25-February 1, February 22-29 and March 21-28 as long as funds allow. Detroit Significantly Improves Recycling Participation in 2007

Westchester County Sticks it to Residents Who Don’t Recycle

Newsday reports that Westchester County will be cracking down on recycling starting in 2008, marking garbage cans with colored stickers who fail to separate out recyclables. Austin Hopes To Go Zero Waste By 2040

Environmental Leader reports that Austin, Texas is aiming to reduce its trash output by 20 percent by 2012, eventually reaching zero waste by the year 2040. This will be accomplished through a green bank. Austin currently has a recycling rate around 30 percent, and is developing discussing the idea of zero waste since as early as 2002.
