And Still The Turtle Watched

Lesson Plan Extensions

The following are some good lesson plans to implement while reading And Still the Turtle Watched:

Concepts: pollution prevention, human disrespect for nature, Native American ways

  • Identify and map areas in community with graffiti or litter. Work with your local Keep America Beautiful organization and/or a local hardware store for supplies and organize cleanups of these areas.
  • Organize and implement a school/neighborhood cleanup and/or adopt a road for cleanup. Be sure to reuse reusables you find and recycle recyclables!
  • Discuss how litter is harmful to wildlife (e.g. how Styrofoam can harm birds, how small animals can get trapped in bottles, jars and cans and how six pack rings can choke turtles, etc.). Ask a Park Ranger from a nearby local park to come and speak to the class about wildlife in your area.
  • Get a local artist to work with your class to design an environmentally-themed mural for an area that tends to get graffiti near the school and propose the project to the local government. See if you can get paint to reuse that was dropped off at a recent household hazardous waste (HHW) collection in your community (Use the Earth 911 locator at the top of this page to help you find out info on the HHW collection).
  • Find out what local tribes are in your area/State and look into some other legends about nature and how humans have learned from nature.
  • Visit a local nature park and write a legend of your own about the natural world that you find there, near your home, or school.
