Just A Dream
Lesson Plan Extensions
The following are some good lesson plans to implement while reading Just a Dream:
Concepts: pollution/litter prevention, environmental protection, planning for the future
- Discuss as a class what environmental actions you can take now to make the environment better for your future and for that of others.
- Discuss different modes of transportation and which ones benefit the environment the most and why (car, bus, carpool, train, bike, walk, electric car, monorail, solar car, magnet train, etc.) Investigate new technologies (electric, magnets, solar, hydro, etc.) as a class and discuss what forms of transportation you think you will use in the future.
- See if there is a solar, electric or other alternative energy car in your community that can come visit the school. Write your own environmental dream story.
- Plant a native tree as a class in your schoolyard and chart its growth over the years.
- Discuss what would happen if no one ever took their garbage out.
- Look at a weeks worth of garbage from the classroom or the teacher’s home that doesn’t get presorted in any way, and weigh and sort it into categories of that needing to be landfilled, reusable items, recyclable items and compostable items. Quantify by weight and amounts and chart the findings.
- Discuss how much of the garbage can be diverted from the landfill. Tour your local or regional landfill and learn about sanitary lined landfills, leachate treatment, methane gas treatment and what wildlife visits!
- Have your local Recycling Coordinator visit from the Environmental Protection or Solid Waste Department and discuss what items can be recycled in your area and what they get turned into!
- Also use the Earth’s 911 locator on our home page to help you find out info on what can be recycled in your area.
