The following are some good lesson plans to implement while reading The Salamander Room:

Concepts: habitat requirements, caring for pets

Some animals are considered to be indicator species for the health of the environment. Invite a Wildlife Biologist to visit your classroom and talk about frogs and other species that are found in your area and about the health of the environment where you live. Find out what you can do to help keep the habitat around where you live healthy.
Discuss as a class what are the essential items needed for every living thing to survive (food, water, shelter, space). Discuss how the amount of these items may have changed over time for different living things and discuss why (habitat destruction). Ask a City Planner to come to your class to discuss what steps they have taken for the future of your community that will benefit both humans and wildlife.
Make sure that your own class or home pet gets all the proper care it needs to have a long healthy and happy life! Figure out the pet’s specific requirements and take part in their overall care. Have students share pictures that illustrate the needs and care. As a class, research at the library and/or on the Internet what types of endangered species you can help protect. Adopt an endangered species as a class and learn more about it all year long.
