Bottle It Up

Fact

While plastic bottle recycling hit an all-time high in 2009 at 31 percent, there are still many ways to reduce plastic waste.

Get Started

  • A small investment in a reusable bottle upfront can save over the long run. Use your reusable bottles at the gym, the office or around the house.
  • Cut a plastic water bottle in half and use the bottom to grow herbs.
  • Remove the narrow part of the bottle neck and reuse as a vase.

Become a Pro

  • Try making a plastic bottle coin purse or any of these other great craft suggestions.
  • Glue a ring of plastic bottles together and put a top on it to make a table or stool like this.
  • Encourage your employer to hand out reusable bottles as promotional gifts, or give them away as party favors at your next major event.

I reuse glass juice bottles from the health food store or Starbucks I find on the street, never buy bottled water. I keep thinking I’ll filter my tap water, like Alice Waters of Chez Panisse fame, but just keep drinking tap water. I have a plastic bin I keep all my clean glass bottles in, various sizes and shapes, even flat liquor bottles found on the street, and real maple syrup bottles that fit in my backpack easier than round.
