Goodwill Hunting

Fact

As of 2007, there were 391 National Parks located in 49 of the 50 states. If you want to experience them, you’ll probably need a backpack to store your supplies and garbage. Backpacks are a great item to buy used at a second-hand store. In fact, why stop at a backpack? As a country, the U.S. produces tons and tons of new clothing products. California leads all states in this manufacturing, making more then $13 billion annually.

Get Started

  • Most thrift stores are divided into sections based on the clothing types. Check out the ‘brand name’ section for higher quality garments for work or special functions
  • Need new workout clothes? Check out the used clothing stores first, since workout apparel can be anything comfortable and worn-in
  • Need some extra cash? There are stores all over the nation that will buy clothes from you. Not only can you make a buck, but when you need clothes, these stores are a great place to find a bargain

Become a Pro

  • Create a clothing co-op. This can consist of monthly clothes swaps and meetings for reuse and redesign ideas
  • You may not love that jacket anymore, but your younger sister has been eyeing it for years. Pass on your older threads to your friends and family, and encourage them to do the same
  • Organize a clothing drive for your local homeless or domestic violence shelter. This can help people clean out their closets and help out some neighbors in need

The thought of wearing clothes previously worn by a stranger skeeves me out. I don’t mind wearing “hand-me-downs” from someone I know, but a stranger? No.
