Stay Put!
Plant It
The average North American vacation will cost $244 per day for two people for lodging and meals, according to the American Automobile Association. Add some kids and airfare, and a 10-day vacation could easily jump to $10,000. To cut back in tight economic times, many are opting for a staycation, during which one stays at home or takes day trips rather than long-distance traveling. It’s easier on your budget and the environment.
Water It
- Get some fresh air and spend time outdoors at the beach or camping. Every minute outdoors is a minute less of indoor energy use.
- If you opt to stay inside, conserve energy by cutting the communication cords for a few days. Unplug computers, cell phone chargers and other electronic devices that suck energy even when they’re turned off.
- Don’t abandon your green habits. A staycation is all about kicking back, but make sure to still recycle properly and conserve energy use. If the place you are visiting does not have a recycling bin, take recyclables home with you.
- Ditch the car. Try biking to your local destination or using mass transit. When packing a sack lunch, store food and drink in reusable containers rather than plastic bags or paper sacks.
Grow It
- Support eco-friendly businesses. Is there a botanical garden or eco-friendly hotel in town?
- Spend time at your local parks and forests. Enjoying the outdoors near your home will increase your motivation to conserve the environment. This is also a fantastic way to meet new people and teach children the importance of living green.
- Coordinate your staycation with friends and neighbors so you can pool resources or carpool to local eco destinations.
