Earth911.com has a story about Seabins, floating trash and chemical collectors. How can we get people together in localities with large water pollution problems to fund and put these to work? Tacoma, Wash., where I live, would benefit from a swarm of Seabins on the waterfront and in the Tide Flats shipping district.

Seabins cost $3,764 in lots of 10, so $37,640 to put 10 to work in the Tacoma Marina, Foss Waterway, and along the Schuster Parkway shorefront could be the first step. They need to be emptied twice a day, so there is a staffing cost of, say, $20 an hour. That's another $40,000 a year to operate them, with replacement costs of perhaps 40 percent a year. That's $100,000 a year to clean waste, microplastics, and chemicals for Tacoma's key public waterways.
I'll put up $100 a year for this, if 999 Tacomans will join me.
