Removing labels from recyclable plastic.. Must I?
Is it really necessary to remove paper labels from plastic bags before recycling them? I've been trying to do this, but it seems impossible at worst, and time consuming at best.
If I have to do this, what is the best/quickest way? So far, I haven't been able to successfully remove all of a paper label from even one bag...
Hi -- thanks for asking. In general, no, you don't need to remove paper labels from plastic bags and bottles.
It's necessary in some cities to remove a paper label from a plastic container, such as a jar, but with a label on a plastic bag -- assuming you are describing a thin plastic, like a grocery or produce bag -- it makes more sense to tear the part of the bag with the label off and recycle the rest.
The time, vinegar, and results don't add up to justify removing a label when you can tear the paper-contaminated out and recycle the rest.
