So what if Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup 2011 started a week ago? It’s never too late to do something good for the environment.

KAB is asking for volunteers to partake in the annual litter collection, flora planting and community cleaning event, which runs from March 1 to May 31.

“Volunteers are essential to strengthening our communities, boosting our local economies and protecting our shared environment,” says Matthew McKenna, president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful, in a statement. “The Great American Cleanup provides a wonderful opportunity to inspire civic engagement that addresses the very real challenges of our times.”

Last year, volunteers collected 76 million pounds of litter, planted 160,000 trees and kept harmful materials like 7.6 million pounds electronics out of the landfill.
