We all know recycling is good for the environment, but what about the economy?

This month, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) released the findings of an economic impact study that shows scrap metal recycling isn’t just good eco-practice, but good business as well.

The study determined that the scrap recycling industry is responsible for over 460,000 U.S. jobs and generates over $87 billion annually – a figure comparable to other large mainstream industries such as cosmetics or milk.

“When people think of recycling, they think of the bin at the curb when in fact our industry is a multi-billion-dollar ‘Made in America’ manufacturing success story,” said Robin Wiener, president of ISRI.

“At a time when the national job market is fragile, the recycling industry is creating high-quality, good-paying opportunities for Americans. This in turn feeds money back into the economy through spending and revenue generated from taxes.”
