Toyota has been feeling the backlash of its recent recalls after several models distributed worldwide were suspended due to sticking accelerator pedals and a general faulty braking system.
The company has temporarily discontinued production at two major factories in the United States, following plummeting sales and negative news coverage that has hurt the business’s previously untarnished reputation.
Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota Motor Corporation, has made plans to fix the 8 million vehicles that have showed signs of safety problems.
The recalls are divided into two categories defined by the company as “Sticky Pedal Accelerator Recall” and “Potential Floor Mat Interference with Accelerator Pedal Recall.”
The sticky pedal accelerator problem involves the inability of the accelerator pedal to return back to an idle position. In other instances, which fall under the second category, the accelerator pedal gets trapped in the driver’s floor mat. This happens, the company explains, when “the driver’s side floor mat is not compatible with the vehicle and/or is not properly secured.”
While the recalls are still taking place, one of the most pressing questions may be whether or not the discarded car parts will be recycled.
“Toyota is recalling the old style floor mat as part of this recall to completely remove them from the market,” Toyota issued in a statement. “At some point in time, in the future, these mats will be recycled into other products such as road surfaces. Toyota has not completed the details of the recycling actions.”
In addition to encouraging drivers to remove the driver’s side floor mat, Toyota has said that it will be replacing all front driver and passenger-side floor mats to prevent further incidents of floor mat pedal entrapment.
