8. Sustainable paints
The days of harsh paint fumes and chemical-laden colors are largely behind us, and eco-minded remodelers now have scores of options for sourcing sustainable paint.
The best place to start is at your local household hazardous waste (HHW) facility. Many offer “swap shops” where you can pick up paint left over from neighbors’ remodeling projects.
In many communities, recycled paint is free. Or, it’s sold at a fraction of the price of a new gallon, meaning you can save big bucks on your remodel by choosing reuse. While browsing your local swap shop, keep an eye out for low-VOC options to ditch those nasty fumes.
If your town doesn’t offer a swap shop, some manufacturers (including Amazon Paint and GreenSheen Paint) sell recycled latex paint as part of their product lines. You can also look into paint made from more uncommon recycled materials, like this low-VOC blend made from recycled plastic bottles.
