A group of volunteers picking up litter

Our planet’s waterways, green spaces, and communities are overflowing with litter. The problem is bigger than any individual can handle; it requires a global effort. You can help by participating in the Great Global Cleanup.

Investing in Our Planet means taking action. For individuals, invest your time in cleaning up your local community. It’s one of the easiest ways to participate in Earth Day and get involved in larger environmental action.” –Kathleen Rogers, president, EarthDay.org

The Great Global Cleanup is a worldwide volunteer campaign to rid the environment of waste and plastic pollution. It’s a way for individuals and organizations to make positive, tangible impacts on our environment.

Participate in The Great Global Cleanup

While the Great Global Cleanup is a year-round event, many groups and individuals organize cleanups during April as part of their Earth Day activities. Volunteers around the world gather to remove millions of pieces of trash from our green spaces, urban communities, and waterways. In 2022, over 13 million volunteers in 187 countries participated in the Great Global Cleanup, according to EarthDay.org, and this year, they want to go bigger. It’s easy to participate by joining a nearby cleanup or organizing your own group or individual cleanup.

Join a Cleanup

If you’d like to join a cleanup, search the interactive map for organized cleanups in your community.

Note: By default, the map shows public, private, completed, and past cleanups. To see only upcoming public events, click the Layer List icon from the menu below the map and deselect the other options.

Organize a Cleanup

If there are no cleanups near you, why not organize your own? Get together a small group and register your cleanup so others can join. Limiting it to family and friends? Or maybe you’d like to do a cleanup on your own? No worries, you can specify whether your cleanup event is open to the public or private when you register.

The Great Global Cleanup is calling on you to sign up, show up, and clean up. Every action counts. Check out the toolkit to get started and join others to address one of our planet’s most serious issues.
