We are constantly bombarded by messages that tell us we need more stuff to be happy. In the midst of a pandemic, more and more people are starting to question the value of shopping.
Many of us are unemployed or insecurely employed and have no choice about spending less. Even those with secure jobs don’t feel safe going to stores, and a growing awareness of the way our shopping impacts factory, warehouse, and delivery workers is making many of us question which of our purchases are really necessary.

But Empire of Things is not preachy or judgmental. If you want to understand acquisitiveness better without feeling too bad about it, this is a good book to start with.

No Logo, published in 1999, became a manifesto for the movement opposing the consumerist brave new world of the 21st century. The book has not been updated. For a more current look at capitalism’s threat to democracy, try Klein’s The Shock Doctrine. And for the effects of unfettered capitalism on the environment, read This Changes Everything, also by Klein.
